Can a run-flat tire be repaired?

Sometimes — but honestly, most run-flats that come in flat end up replaced. A small puncture in the tread, caught early while the tire still held pressure, may be repairable at the shop's judgment under your tire maker's policy; once a run-flat has been driven at low or zero pressure, the reinforced sidewall can be damaged inside where no one can see it, which is why most manufacturers say replace. Why most run-flats get replaced, not repaired

A run-flat does its job with a heavily reinforced sidewall — after a puncture, that sidewall carries the weight of the car instead of the air. That is also exactly why repairs are rare: driving on it at low or zero pressure flexes and heats that structure far beyond what it was built for, and the damage happens inside the sidewall, where no plug, patch, or visual check can reach.

That is why most tire makers advise against repairing a run-flat once it has been run flat. A tire can look perfectly fine on the outside and still have a compromised sidewall — and a run-flat with hidden damage has lost the one feature you paid for. If it fails again, there is no second safety margin, and on most BMW, MINI and many Mercedes models there is no spare in the trunk either.

When a repair is actually on the table

The repairable case is narrow but real: a puncture in the tread area — a nail or screw between the shoulders — caught early. Early means your TPMS warned you, you slowed down, and the tire never fully lost pressure. In that case a proper internal repair may be possible, at the shop's judgment and within your tire's manufacturer's policy.

Two things are never repairable, on a run-flat or any other tire:

  • Sidewall damage — cuts, bulges, or a puncture outside the tread area;
  • A tire that has been driven flat — once the sidewall has carried the car, the safe answer is replacement.

The only honest way to decide is off the rim. We dismount the tire, put it on the machine, and inspect the inner liner for the wrinkling and rubber dust that betray a zero-pressure run. If it is repairable, we repair it properly from the inside — an internal patch is $70. If it is not, we say so and quote a replacement — no guessing either way.

Run-flats are designed to let you keep driving a limited distance at reduced speed after a puncture — commonly quoted as around 80 km at up to 80 km/h. Treat that as a ceiling, not a promise: the real figure depends on your tire, your load, and the road, so check your vehicle manual for your car's actual limits.

That range exists to get you somewhere safe — ideally straight to a shop — not to finish your week. Every extra kilometre at zero pressure grinds away more of the sidewall's structure and pushes the tire further from repairable. Replace like-for-like, or switch to conventional tires?
